How a Loveland winter wears a chimney down
Southwest Ohio gives a chimney no easy stretch of the year. Burning season runs from the first cold snap in late autumn through the long gray stretch of a Cincinnati-area winter, and every fire you light deposits creosote on the walls of the flue. Creosote is the tarry residue of incomplete combustion, and on the slow, smoldering fires people tend to build on a damp January evening it builds faster and harder than most homeowners expect. Left in place it narrows the flue, fouls the draft, and becomes the fuel for a chimney fire, which is precisely the hazard a yearly sweep exists to prevent.
Then there is water, which does the quieter and ultimately more expensive damage. A Loveland chimney stands fully exposed at the highest point of the house, taking the rain that rolls through the Ohio Valley and the snowmelt that sits on the crown. When the temperature swings back and forth across freezing, which it does constantly here from December into March, any water that has soaked into the brick, the mortar, or a cracked crown freezes, expands, and pries the masonry apart a little more with each cycle. That freeze-thaw grind is why a chimney that looked fine three winters ago can suddenly be shedding mortar and spalling brick. The damp that shows up as a stain on a bedroom ceiling in February was often set in motion by a hairline crack in the crown the previous fall, which is exactly why we press homeowners to have the chimney looked at before the burning season rather than after the leak.
